Wegmans Ballantyne Opening: Dining and Opening-Week Plans

Wegmans opens its first Charlotte store at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 11550 N. Community House Road. The company confirmed the date to the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle on Sept. 28. Its own Ballantyne store page still reads "Opening October 14, 2026." The store sits less than half a mile from The Bowl at Ballantyne, just off I-485 at Exit 61.

Most coverage treats this as grocery news. The floor plan points somewhere else. The Wegmans has more indoor seating than many restaurants, a grill with a bar, and a covered outdoor patio with a play area for children. That makes it a new place to spend an evening, half a mile from the development that already fills that role. It also opens in the middle of the most crowded stretch of Ballantyne's fall calendar.

The dining side of the building

The Charlotte Observer toured the store in May. Its report and Axios's coverage from the same day describe a dining area big enough to compare with the restaurant rows nearby.

Space What's planned
Market Café Made-to-order sandwiches and salads, 180 indoor seats, plus outdoor seating that the Observer counts at 104 and Axios at 106
Market Grill Food ordered from a QR-code menu and delivered to your table, with about eight bar seats
Outdoor play area Artificial turf and a covered patio, with a mobile beer-and-wine cart planned
Counters Sushi, pizza, a wing bar, self-serve coffee, a seafood counter with fish cut daily, and ready-to-cook meals

Wegmans described the outdoor play area to Axios as a test of that amenity at this first Charlotte store. A turf play area next to a beer-and-wine cart is a setup for a weeknight, more than for a quick run for milk. The Observer also reported two in-store novelties: an animatronic rooster that crows every hour and a raised train that runs through the store.

Size matters here too. At more than 110,000 square feet, the store is over twice the size of the traditional grocers expanding around Charlotte, including Harris Teeter and Publix. Wegmans bought the 14-acre site for $5.5 million in January 2025 and is putting $34.7 million into the facility. Much of that extra floor space goes to food you eat on site.

Why the half mile to The Bowl matters

The Bowl's current dining directory lists Bossy Beulah's, Brasserie Copain, Flower Child, Harriet's Hamburgers, North Italia, Olde Mecklenburg Brewery and Postino, among others. Several 2026 openings have already added to the area. Brasserie Copain, the French bakery and brasserie, is open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. South Block opened its first North Carolina shop at 14020 Stream Way on Jan. 17. Shuckin' Shack Oyster Bar opened April 8 at Promenade on Providence. Kura Revolving Sushi Bar opened its first North Carolina location July 17 at StoneCrest at Piper Glen.

Two more openings at The Bowl are still pending. Culinary Dropout's Ballantyne page, updated Sept. 24, still says "Coming Soon" at 15220 Bowl St. The plan is a two-story restaurant with a live-music stage, rooftop and indoor bars, a patio and private dining. Mister O1 Extraordinary Pizza is slated for early fall at 14020 Stream Way, Suite 110, and The Bowl's directory still lists it as "Opening Soon." BrickTop's is no longer a fall prospect. The Observer's restaurant guide now puts its Ballantyne opening in spring 2027.

All of this means the stretch of N. Community House Road between Wegmans and The Bowl will have more places to sit and eat by year's end than it did in January. It also means one more large draw on the same roads during October.

The two weeks around opening day

Here is how Wegmans' opening lines up with what's already on the calendar within about half a mile.

The busiest stretch runs from Tuesday night, Oct. 13, through Saturday, Oct. 17. In those five days, the Wegmans tailgate and opening come first, followed by a free Friday concert at TD Amp and a ticketed Saturday show. The BuildStrong festival also has sensory-friendly hours from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 3, which helps anyone who wants a quieter visit to the Backyard. The event listing for Whiskey, Wine & Fire shows tickets at $45 to $85. Two weekly fixtures continue at The Bowl through the month: a flower-truck pop-up that runs through Nov. 28 and an OMB run club on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m.

Opening week, practically

The company has been specific about opening week. Most of what's known came from a Wegmans spokesperson in the Observer's Sept. 24 report.

  • Traffic. Wegmans' asset protection team is working with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and city transportation officials. Officers will direct traffic throughout opening week, and the plan may run past the first week if needed. No specific routes or intersections have been announced.
  • Parking. The lot has 664 spaces. Wegmans set that number based on the size of the site.
  • Overnight arrivals. Fans may enter the parking lot before opening, and overnight tailgating is allowed on Oct. 13. Wegmans plans extra staff on site, along with portable restrooms and handwashing stations.
  • Bags. There are no single-use plastic bags. Paper bags cost 5 cents each.
  • The app. A shopping list built in the Wegmans app shows the aisle for every item. The free Shoppers Club unlocks digital coupons.
  • Pickup and delivery. Both start on opening day. Wegmans employees handle pickup at dedicated lanes in front of the store, and a third party handles delivery. Meals2Go hot meals and catering will also be available.
  • Pharmacy. There are no current plans for one.

The Observer reported that the "Bring Wegmans to Charlotte" Facebook group has nearly 9,000 members and has been discussing tailgating and camping for the opening. That group's size is the clearest public sign of how many people may show up on day one. If you mainly want to see the café and the patio, pickup lanes and a trip after the first week are the lower-traffic option. As of late September, Wegmans' store page shows the opening date but no regular daily hours. Older notices about lane closures on N. Community House Road were for roadwork in late 2025 and don't apply this fall.

What's local on the shelves

Wegmans ran a survey asking Charlotte shoppers what they wanted in the store. Its September update said the Ballantyne store will carry Mac's Speed Shop barbecue sauce and regional beers from Legion, OMB and Sugar Creek, alongside Western New York products that respondents asked for. OMB beer will be on the shelf at Wegmans, and the OMB taproom at The Bowl is hosting Mecktoberfest half a mile away during the same two weeks.

After October

The calendar stays full after the opening crowds thin out. The Bowl's outdoor ice rink is scheduled to run from Nov. 21 to Jan. 10 at 11115 Upper Avenue, with one-hour sessions and $20 general admission. The Bowl Street Pop-Up Market returns Nov. 7. The Carolina Holiday Light Spectacular is set to return to Ballantyne's Backyard sometime in November or December with more than one million lights, though dates haven't been announced. By then, the Wegmans patio and the restaurants at The Bowl will be open at the same time on the same short stretch of road.
